We regret to inform you that the Sharon United Methodist Weekday School will be closing at the conclusion of the 2013 summer camp session. The school can no longer sustain itself financially due to an ongoing decline in enrollment. The school currently has 19 children, two of whom are church members.
It is not for lack of effort by Director Sally Swanson or the Weekday School Board. Over the past few years these leaders have passionately faced difficult challenges outside of their control such as a recovering economy, a proliferation of other schools, and demographic shifts. Many other area weekday and preschools are also in decline, with some already closing.
The church has been honored to partner with the Weekday School over the years. Some of the ways that we have offered support include our prayers, providing space rent-free, paying the insurance and utilities, promoting the school, and enabling our Office Manager to do the bookkeeping and our Director of Children’s Ministry to provide faith development. Additionally, many members of the congregation have served on the school’s board.
This was an incredibly difficult decision to make. The Weekday School has been an important part of Sharon and the SouthPark community for well over 30 years. Many of you have been touched personally by the school. We ask you to join us in prayer for the students, families, Sally, board members, and teachers.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says that for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under Heaven. The Sharon Weekday School had an amazing season. We trust that God will provide for all of those affected by this decision, and that Sharon United Methodist Church will continue to reach out to the families of the SouthPark community through both ongoing and new ministries.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Kyle and Bailey Bartee, Covenant Council Chair
